We desire

I love this photo & quotation, so you get both.

From our com padres at Ginkworld:

We desire:

To celebrate the diversity of the individual. Discrimination, on any basis of gender, race, ethnicity, appearance or distinguishing characteristics is unacceptable. We appreciate the individual and encourage them to use their creativity appropriately in-group settings. We strongly encourage people to be who God desires them to become, and not what others place on them as limitations.

To understand and develop our need for authentic and caring friendships. We understand that all of us want true and lasting friendship, but are not sure how to develop them, and not sure how to act when we do. We believe small groups are the key to developing such relationships. We believe that small groups allow us to develop intimate friendships in a caring and participating environment, while allowing us to express our individuality.

To truly experience the fullness of God in our lives. We desire to open our lives to God, and in so experience His full power and love. We believe this is accomplished by our desire to study, be in fellowship with others and share our understanding of God with those around us.

To love people and help them develop a healthy wholeness. We desire not to judge, we desire strongly not to judge. We see people, all people, as having value to God and seeking to know how God is working in their lives. To help people see the wholeness of self, we believe we need to help them look deep inside who they are, and see the junk that clogs their lives. This is messy, and time consuming. But we believe it to be central to our understanding of how we are to be in relationship with others, and God.

God transforms people at their core. We, as people, may want to develop shades to help us deal with certain issues in our life; still, God is God. We believe we can share the truth in a gracious and loving way – Jesus never shared with those seeking God in a mean spirited, hurtful way.

To help people mature in their walk. We believe we are all walking this thing we call life together, and as such we need to be willing to walk with each other. Walking alone is lonely – walking with others allows us to help carry each other when needed. Faith, and faith development, is challenging – it can alter us at the core of who we are, and we strive to be challenged and moved ahead in our walk of faith.

Encasing Jesus in abstract theology

Something to get your day started:

". . .which came first: the impulse to sanitize and tame Jesus by encasing him in abstract theology, thereby removing our motivation for discipleship, or our natural repulsion towards discipleship that forced us to domesticate Jesus to let us off the hook."

Jesus Redux

[This story has been out for awhile, but I couldn't resist interjecting a comment or two.]

Just when you think the world can't get any stranger, it does.

Meet Jesus Christ.  Aka José Luis De Jesus Miranda.

Call me an incurable skeptic, but I didn't know that Jesus was:
  • Puerto Rican
  • The kind of guy who needed body guards
  • Into "bling" (e.g., Rolexes, BMW's, diamond encrusted rings)
Here's the web site (Spanish site) of his world-wide ministry.  It's gaining world-wide notoriety & support. If you're interested in reading (seeing) more, here are a few places to start:
  • Here's an article posted in the Miami News Times site.
  • CNN has a video entry on this bizarre topic; it's called Jesus Redux.
  • Here's a Fox News video posted on YouTube.
Oh my, Maranatha!

NHL rookie class

Here's a recent  TSN.ca article about the 2006-2007 rookie class.  I'm wondering whether Evgeni Malkin can life up to all of the hype.  We'll see.

I'm ready for a new season of NHL hockey!  :-)

Check out smplr.

"It's a simple homepage search engine that sends queries to Google."  According to the description, smplr loads faster than Google--that's it's major drawing card.

To claim we believe is simply not enough

Something to chew on:

". . .Christianity over the past two thousand years has moved from a tribe of renegades to a religion of conformists. Those who choose to follow Jesus must become participants in an insurrection. To claim we believe is simply not enough."

When did doubting become the unpardonable sin?

A Thursday afternoon devotional thought:

History has labeled Thomas "the doubter", when all he did was exhibit risky curiosity. He wanted to experience Jesus for himself--a second-handed faith just wouldn't do.  But let’s talk about that "doubting thing" for a minute.

Let’s pretend, for the sake of discussion, that he did doubt. When did doubting become the unpardonable sin or a transgression worthy of social isolation & eternal disdain?

Furthermore, when did you stop doubting?

How are his doubts any different from yours or mine? Instead of thinking of Thomas as someone with whom we can closely identify, he’s been so effectively condemned (in an arrogant, holier-than-thou manner I must add), that he's the last person we could ever relate to.

Devastated by the gruesome death of a close friend, he’s inconsolable, bitter, crushed, afraid, searching. And yes, maybe even doubting.

But wouldn’t we all?

Thomas gets a lot of bad press

Thoughts for Sunday from Dylan's blog:

Thomas gets a lot of bad press, and I don't think he deserves it. He wants to touch Jesus, and who wouldn't? A lot of us feel that way. One of my favorite worship songs (which is track #10 from my favorite worship record) has a chorus that goes like this:

I need to know that God is real
I need to know that Christ can feel
the need to touch and love and heal
the world including me

That's something that Jesus' followers most definitely need as they gather in this Sunday's gospel. They are gathered secretly, behind locked doors, "for fear of the Judeans." If you can, please read hoi ioudaioi in verse 19 this way, rather than "the Jews," as the NRSV has it. First off, there's no Greek word in the first century that corresponds neatly to our use of "Jew." Particularly as the Gospel According to John uses the term, hoi ioudioi aren't all adherents to Judaism, or all those of the people of Israel (Jesus and all of his disciples are Jews; they're not locked up for fear of themselves!), but rather those who not only live in Judea but whose primary allegiance is to the Judean authorities and the Temple aristocracy. The 'Judeans' hold what power and influence they have at the pleasure of Rome, and its basis is the Temple system that, in the Gospel According to John, Jesus rails against from the very start of his career.

So the question on the minds of Jesus' followers, in the dark and confusing days immediately following Jesus' execution at the hands of Roman soldiers and the instigation of the Judean authorities, is probably not so much "will we be next?" as it is, "how long do you think we can last?"

That totally understandable fear is keeping the disciples in hiding -- though apparently not Thomas, as he's not with those cowering in the locked room when Jesus appears to them. And so Thomas doesn't see Jesus, doesn't experience Jesus' breathing on his followers, doesn't receive the commission the risen Jesus gives the others.

Read more here.  Keep in mind that she's following the Lectionary, I'm not.  :-)
