Read the church fathers during Lent

I must confess that I've had very little exposure to the writings of the early church fathers (even in seminary).  Therefore, this seem like an interesting endeavor during Lent.

Here's the reading plan.

Here's the reading plan in addition to the texts.

Please pray for Mike

Michael Menchaca, a member of the infamous Cleburne Barndogs and a former member of my youth group, is struggling to overcome Bacterial Meningitis in the ICU of Harris Hospital in Forth Worth.

As you might imagine, his family is devistated and worried, and would deeply appreciate your thoughtrs and prayers.

Here's Mike's Facebook page if you would like to leave him a message.

Blogging hiatus

I plan on taking a blogging hiatus for the next few days.  Nothing to worry about.  I'm doing fine.  I just need to step back for a few days.

Shut up, Bill

Though I didn't think much of Bill as our president, I do agree with the heart of this letter:

Dear Bill,

We loved Bill Clinton as president.

When you told us you didn't inhale, with that little twinkle in your eye, we believed you and loved you even more.

When you got more than just a twinkle in your eye and a cigar in the -- well, we stuck by you. We rallied against the vast right wing conspiracy and ushered Newt and his fellow reptilians out of office.

Man, the 90s were fun - huh? The Macarena alone... But now we're in a new decade. Web 2.0, YouTube and camera phones; preemptive wars and terrorist attacks. It's a new era. And we've spent 8 years under the thumb of a royal son.

We're ready for change. We have some amazing Presidential Candidates. Edwards, Obama, and of course, the candidate like family to you - Clinton.

I know you want your wife to win. A lot of us want a Democrat in 2008. But you're getting mean Bill. That twinkle in your eye is starting to look more like crazy eye.

You're making accusations that Karl Rove & Co. will eat up and spit back out at us come time for the general election.

You're actually disenfranchising folks this time around, dividing the electorate at a time we need to come together.

And Bill, you're starting to make stuff up. And this time, we're noticing. It's a new era, Bill; everything you say is recorded and broadcast.

So what we're asking, Bill, is that you just shut up.

Just shut up.

Sincerely, Pretty Much Everyone

Cloverfield a complete dud

I was greatly disappointed with Cloverfield.

It was a cross between the Blair Witch Project and Godzilla-- annoying amateur photography and a big sea monster.  Geez.

I found the constant jiggling/bounding of the camera annoying.  Not to mention all of the unanswered questions-- why the name Cloverfield, the origin of the monster(s), etc.

I give is a generous C+ for the good FX.  Don't bother seeing it.

I couldn't resist posting this exquisite photo from Flickr. Wow. Breathtaking.

Health update: I'm doing a little better. Recovery is slow & bumpy. But I'm getting accustomed to the new diet, the new lifestyle, and new responsibilities.

Your on-going prayers are appreciated and needed.

Have a refreshing weekend.

They like Jesus but not the church (dvd curriculum)

From Emergent Village:

Dan Kimball’s book They Like Jesus But Not the Church now has a companion six-session DVD curriculum (due out in March), which “looks at the understandable questions and perceptions that people outside of the church have.”

These questions include:

  • “Is the church judgmental, negative and political?”
  • “Does the church arrogantly think they are right and all other religions wrong?”
  • “Is the church homophobic?”

Here's a related video from YouTube:

An insatiable desire for water

In the middle of a regimen of Prednisone to control my ulcerative colitis I developed an insatiable desire for water.  Weird, huh?

It got so severe that I peed every 45 minutes around the clock, and had no desire for "real" food.  Consequently, I ended up bed-ridden for two days.  To turn things around, I spent most of last week in Huguley Hospital's ER, ICU and medical unit to control a blood sugar level that had spiked due to the Predinsone.

Today, I'm feeling better, but still weak.  I'm insulin-dependent (they won't call it diabetes), eating very healthy (a diabetic diet), and trying to regain some sense of normalcy.

Thanks for the e-mails, calls and other expressions of kindness and concern.  Your continued prayers would be deeply appreciated.

Blessings,

MEB

Why God doesn't go to church

Here's an interesting tidbit.

So, what are your thoughts?  Fair, unfair, mean-spirited, on-target?
