Those darn teenagers

Katy Perry, originally Katy Hudson, the daughter of two conservative pastors, first pursued a career as a contemporary Christian artist.  I suppose that did work out, because now, as Katy Perry, she's singing about the joys of kissing another girl.  Wow.  Kids have an uncanny way of makin' a parent proud. ;-)

If you're in a fog and don't have a clue what I'm talking about, here's the video clip.

Here's a live version too.

Happy 4th of July everyone!

Enjoy a hot dog or two, a baseball game, late-night fireworks, and time with family and friends. For me, I'm spending lunchtime with my daughter.

Have a fun, safe and refreshing Independence Day.

Burnt popcorn in my new microwave

It was all so innocent...

I stuck a bag of popcorn in the microwave for 3.5 minutes, but you'd think I left it in there for 33.5 minutes instead.  Yikes.

By the time I reached the living room-- I had taken a quick jaunt to the bathroom--the whole front of the house was filled with gray smoke, a horrendous odor triggered my gag reflex, and the inside of my brand new microwave oven looked like ground zero.

Oh Lord.  It was awful.

And it's still awful.

I've let the house ventilate for 2 hours, turned on all of the fans & hoped for the best.  But so much for hoping.

So, I purchased three odor eliminating room air fresheners as well as three odor eliminating sprays--none of which have done much good so far, unfortunately.

I feel like Cousin Eddie in Christmas Vacation trying to save the burnt up couch-- a noble idea, but a losing proposition.

Geez.

Renting books this summer

With the rising cost of gasoline, most of us find our discretionary spending-- not the least of which is our book purchasing habits-- being affected.

For those of you who fall into that category, you might want to consider renting books.  Posted below are two book renting companies I recently came across.

  • BookSwim.com: This rental service houses over 200,000 titles and have rental plans (and late fee policies) similar to companies like NetFlix.
  • Booksfree.com: This book rental club has 90,000 titles, plus about 18,000 audiobooks.

Let me know if you find book rental clubs helpful.

The death of Steven Curtis Chapman's daughter

After the tragic death of Marie Sue Chapman, or any other beloved friend or family member for that matter, a number of heart-wrenching questions typically surface.

Here's an interesting post dealing with some of those perplexing questions.

Addendum:  If you're looking for the Tennessean news report on this tragedy, click here.  If you're interested in jotting a note to the Chapmans, click here.

An interesting prayer for Memorial Day

By William Sloane Coffin, Jr.

Gracious God, whose own Son’s term of service to humanity was so full that its brevity was no distress, we call to mind on this Memorial Sunday those who will not grow old as we are left to grow old, those whose lives were too brief for us but long enough, perhaps, for thee.

Forgive us that they died so young because we were too unimaginative, too imperious, too indifferent, or just too late to think of better ways than warfare to conduct the business of the world. Gratefully, we remember the generosity that prompted them to share the last of their rations, the last pair of dry socks, to share in the course of one hour in the foxhole more than most of us care to share with one another in a lifetime. And we recall the courage that made more than one of them fall on the grenade there was no time to throw back.

Grant, O God, that they may not have died in vain. May we draw new vigor from past tragedy. Buttress our instincts for peace, sorely beleaguered. Save us from justifications invented to make us look noble, grand and righteous and from blanket solutions to messy, detailed problems.

Give us the vision to see that those nations that gave the most to their generals and least to their poor were, throughout all history, the first to fall. Most of all, give us the vision to see that the world is now too dangerous for anything but truth, too small for anything but love. Through Jesus Christ our Savior, who became what we are to make us what he is.

Amen.

Including children in weddings

I've decided to try something new in a wedding I'm performing this afternoon-- vows to step-children.

Since so many weddings are blended these days, I thought it seemed logical (and important) for a groom to express his undying love and commitment to his new bride as well as her son from another marriage.

With all of them living under the same roof, it seemed like the right thing to do.

Here's a copy of the service.

5 for fifty

nieh_2

I ran across 5 for Fifty today.  Here's the request:

  1. Give 5 minutes a day to pray for those suffering from HIV/AIDS.
  2. Give 5 hours a week to fast for those suffering from HIV/AIDS.
  3. Give 5 dollars a month to the Five for 50 Fund and support worthy causes.
  4. Give 5 days a year to travel overseas and help alleviate poverty and suffering.
  5. Give 5 people an opportunity to join you on your journey.

Check it out here.

Mail a postage paid brick to junk mailers

Are you inundated with junk mail?

Maybe it's time to send annoying companies a postage paid brick (or an old college textbook you don't know what to do with) with this response:

Dear Bulk Mailer,

Please find attached to your no-postage-necessary envelope, this old outdated college textbook. I figured with all these great junk mails you send me every month, you'd like something in return! I know it costs twenty cents for every ounce I mail to you, so I hope it doesn't weigh too much more than an ounce.

~ Resident or Homeowner

Yikes.  I don't know that I'd go to this extreme, but couldn't resist posting it.
